Should I even bother going to college?

“Change is inevitable”

I hear this phrase at least twice a year and each time its hits me with a resounding force. In a less than 3 weeks I will starting my junior year at University!! (PINCH ME, HARD) In all my phenomenal 19 years of life, I have never experienced a place filled with as much constant change as college alone contains. I’m willing to bet my first born to anyone who dare argues with me that they remained the same person and still held the same morals, values and views on several topics throughout their college career. You are shaken, stirred, challenged, made to rack your brain and shift perspective everyday.

Oddly enough about 80% of this change happens outside of the classroom! You go into college bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to “Get good grades” or “Turn the fuck up” or “Find Myself” or ” Make my parents proud”, whatever your goals are coming into college and whether you meet them or not, you can be sure that they will take something from you.

With two years of college under my belt the biggest lesson I’ve learned thus far is that college takes! It takes your money (don’t I know it), it takes your sense of being a child, your naiveté, your comfort zone, the space in you brain that is not yet filled with knowledge, your low self esteem, your fear of a lot of things, what you thought you knew about yourself, your sense of dependence on people or things, your drinking tolerance, your ignorance… I could go on. And this is what makes your change throughout college virtually inescapable.

Nevertheless, as college takes, it replaces. Imagine a robber coming into your house and as they take, they replace each item with something different. Something you may not have experienced before and while you’re disappointed that whatever you had before is not there, there is no way you would trade what you now have. College replaces whatever it “loots” from you with an open mind, life long companions, sense of self, independence, adulthood (although it could keep that), new values, craving for a better life and for me personally the feeling that I will make it through all types of adversity.

There’s no avoiding it so you must learn to habituate to whatever change may come. Oddly enough however, most people do not take notice of these changes until they return home for break and realize that there is a divide with people they interacted with before college. Conversations may be different as well as well some interests.

People change and with that comes growth. Humans need growth to survive; whether it be mentally, physically or emotionally.. we must grow.

Here’s to another year of change and growth as I continue through my journey !

New Hampshire

Living on the border of  Massachusetts and New Hampshire definitely has its benefits! New Hampshire is by far my favorite state. I’m super into any type of outdoor activity and there’s definitely a wide range of those offered all over the state. Also included are the various beaches open to everyone (Seabrook, Hampton, Salisbury, etc). My favorite mountains to hike are Monadack and Mt. Willey but make no mistake there’s several more that I just haven’t tried out.

People of New Hampshire: Laidback, friendly, liberal, talkative, active

Weather: Cold New England Winters and moderately hot summers

New year, new blog?

Hey guys, hope you all had an amazing entrance into the new year! It seems like everyone is in a screw new years resolutions type of mood but if they work for you then I mean why not keep it up? I decided to start a new blog with a different structure and approach than any I have seen on other blogs. My new blog BeautyetBrains features the fashion and beauty talk that we all love but also includes discussion of important topics that we face in our lives everyday. I want to make these discussions mentally stimulating. These discussions will be controversial at times but I believe that everyone’s opinion should be heard (with exceptions to dogmatism). We are in an era where it seems  weird that someone can love makeup and also have intellectual conversations with people.

Please take a minute to go over and check it out, leave a comment or a like. Step out of this society of less and less people having intellectual and mentally stimulating conversations with each other about issues that matter.

If you would like to suggest topics for discussions, go right ahead!

My First Halloween!

Yes I am 19. Yes, the most recent halloween (10/31/2014) was first time participating in halloween. To me thats no biggie but to the humans around me that seemed as weird as saying that you don’t drink anything that has water in it (dude everything you can drink deff has water). I’ve never been one to go into a practice blindly without any prior information about the meaning behind the activity. Some claims that have been made about halloween were that it is a devilish holiday that the bible itself acknowledges as sinful whereas others celebrate it in collaboration with Dias de los Meurtos and others just want some free candy.

According to History.com, Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain, which consisted of dressing up in costumes to ward off ghosts, usher in the winter season and mark the end of the harvest season. Halloween today focuses more on various females as cats and lots of diabetes and cavities in the form of candy. Trust me, I’m not being impartial I love a good twix bar and whiskers as much as the next person. The Celts also believed that this transition between the seasons was a bridge to the world of the dead. The holiday transformed from a superstitious ritual to a day of fun, costumes, drinking, gathering, and treats for children and adults.

My opinion on the whole halloween circus definitely changed once I was educated with the facts behind it all. I’m not fond of participating in anything that commemorates the devil as a personal preference and I have been blindly believing that that was all halloween was based on. My lesson can be applied to so many instances that people come across where they make prejudgments of people, beliefs, religions, races, etc. I challenge you reading this to educate yourself, I mean research from reliable sources. Do some back study on a topic that you know deep down you know nothing about but still have an opinion about. I challenge you to condition yourself to look into everything before you make judgements about it.

The DO’s and DONT’s of Tea Tree Oil!

Everyone and their mom has heard so much about all types of oils and the wonders they can do for your skin. Focusing the spotlight on Tea tree oil in particular, I am here to tell pretty much all you need to know about the miracle in a bottle and offer some insight based on my experience with the product.

DO

1. Use it to heal athlete’s foot, toe nail fungus, vaginal infections, genital herpes, gum disease, dandruff, yeast infections, kill lice, dry up pimples over night and help treat acne, etc.

2. Always use the oil with a carrier oil (some great pairing oils are Jojoba oil, Grape seed oil, Argan oil, etc).

3. Use it to open your scalp and promote hair growth (buy hair products such as shampoos and conditioners that contain tea tree oil for proper distribution)

DONT’s

1. Never take it by mouth. Tea tree oil can cause severe reactions when taken orally such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, coma ,etc.

2. Never use it at its maximum strength (completely undiluted)!!

Trust me on this because I talk from experience! I used it on my skin to treat break outs thinking it would work even better by itself but instead I have developed severe sensitivity and itchiness and my breakouts have increased! EEK! Nonetheless I have learnt my lesson and will be pairing it with a carrier immediately!!

3. Never use it while using products with benzoyl peroxide!! Again I speak from experience! You do not want to end up with hyper-senitive skin and a rash!

Hope this helped maneuver Tea tree oil and its many uses!

Best dressed at the Billboard Music Awards 2014

So the billboard music awards happened and while I don’t know much about the technicalities of the the music industry but I think the billboards are next in line with the Grammy’s and the Emmy’s in terms of being of major? Don’t quote me on that though! If you don’t watch the awards for the fantastic music acts then the looks sported should be reason enough! Here are my absolute favorites of the night!

Nicki Minaj in a cut out floor length! Double look to see if it was really our Nicki? Yeah, same here! But I’m not complaining about her softer look. Nonetheless, the cut outs give her look a great edge!

Sarah Hyland in a to trip-over-for two piece! The metallic detailing in the skirt and blazer along with the shoes are so sick!

Rosci Diaz in a bodycon dress with cut outs. Seriously, cut outs add the best touch to any dress and this is proof!

Everthing about Keltie Knight is YASS! The geometric design, cut outs (again, Tabitha?), the two colors, length, like she is doing it so right that it brings me so much joy!!

Andi Dorfman in this breathtaking bejweled dress! Are you seeing a theme of regular black dresses with a little something extra that makes them that more special??
